How Much Does It Cost to Produce an Audiobook?

The production costs of an audiobook are a crucial consideration for self-publishers and publishers, as in many cases they also represent the cost of entering the audio market. How high those costs are depends on several factors. Here is a rough overview.

For many small publishers and ambitious self-publishers, audiobook production is still relatively new territory. The market can seem difficult to navigate, but one message has certainly reached most people: the audio market is booming. Never have so many audiobooks been produced — and, more importantly, listened to.

Growth in consumption is still outpacing the rate at which new audiobooks are entering the market. Producing an audiobook therefore continues to offer significant potential.

Understandably, however, one of the deciding factors when entering the market is the initial cost. In another article, we looked at the earning potential of audiobook distribution. Below, we explain how audiobook production costs are structured and which factors influence them.

The audio market is booming and offers significant potential: growth in demand is still outpacing the growth in new productions.

Factors that influence production costs

  • Final length: This is calculated from the script based on the number of characters, including spaces, and has a fairly linear relationship with price. For German-language audiobook productions, a reasonable assumption is a speaking speed of approximately 900 characters including spaces per minute, although this can vary depending on the individual narrator.

  • Voice talent fee: Different narrators charge different rates. But be careful: price is not always an indication of quality. We work exclusively with experienced professionals, and their rates vary considerably.

  • Specific characteristics of the script: Some books require additional effort because of a high density of specialist terminology, foreign place names or proper nouns, requested dialects, dialogue or character voices, or other linguistic characteristics. This may influence the price, although it does not necessarily do so in every case.

  • Additional services: Does the script need editorial adaptation or proofreading? Is sound design required? Are there audio-drama sections or multiple voices? Do you need support with distribution and marketing?

Transparent flat-rate pricing per PFH

For a standard audiobook production using one voice from our voice pool and without additional sound design, production costs are calculated as a flat rate per finished hour of audiobook, abbreviated as PFH.

This flat rate includes all costs associated with creating the casting, the narrator's fee, recording and studio time, post-production, mastering, and more.

For our clients, this is the safest and most transparent approach because the production costs are already established when the project is commissioned.

PFH refers to the complete price per finished hour of audiobook runtime and includes all production costs incurred. This pricing model provides transparency and cost certainty.

Author-narrated productions

If the author wants to narrate the audiobook themselves, the cost depends on how much time is required to record the script. In this case, billing is based on the number of working hours.

As a conservative initial estimate, it makes sense to assume that one hour of finished text requires around two to three hours of studio recording time.

If the recording goes faster, all the better.

A professional narrator will naturally move through the material more quickly because they are likely to require fewer retakes. This has a positive effect not only on recording time but also on the amount of editing and post-production required afterward.

As a conservative rule of thumb, total studio production time can be estimated at approximately six times the finished runtime.

In other words, producing one finished hour of audiobook may involve around three hours of recording and another three hours for editing, post-production, mastering and script checking.

We have summarized some guidance on whether a book should be narrated by the author or by a professional narrator in another article.

Average production costs

For the reasons described above, there is no universal answer to this question.

However, an audiobook has an average finished runtime of around 10 hours, and mid-range production costs start at approximately €350 PFH, excluding VAT.

As described above, this guideline refers to a flat rate that includes all casting and production costs.

Naturally, our voice pool includes both more affordable voices and significantly more expensive ones. Price differences depend heavily on how each individual voice talent calculates their fee.

A truly outstanding narrator does not necessarily have to be expensive.

Some narrators work extremely efficiently, confidently and consistently. Combined with the highly optimized workflows we have developed in our studios through handling a large volume of audiobook productions, this allows us to offer very efficient pricing models.

Even though these figures are still fairly broad, they provide a useful initial indication.

More precise details can then be discussed during a non-binding consultation after we have reviewed the script.

An outstanding voice does not necessarily have to be expensive. Experienced, well-structured workflows from both the voice talent and the studio can result in highly efficient pricing models.

Are there more affordable options?

Of course.

If the script is to be narrated in full, the choice of narrator is probably the single biggest factor influencing the final price.

However, an audiobook should still be narrated by someone with experience.

Maintaining a consistent performance and having a strong feel for pacing, dramatic structure, rhythm and melody — among many other factors — are learned skills.

For an audiobook to be consumed successfully over the long term and monetized effectively, high production quality and strong vocal performance are essential.

For this reason, we work exclusively with experienced professionals who have been selected according to specific criteria.

Experience in script review, voice direction and preparing the final production is equally important.

In addition, platforms such as Audible impose technical specifications and quality requirements before accepting a title for distribution. Meeting these standards requires extensive knowledge of audio engineering and the audiobook industry.
